Still trying to stay busy...

When I first started working the 3am to noon shift for the morning show, my first inclination was to nap all the time when I got off of work. However, I started feeling like a troll maintaining the work, sleep, work, sleep pattern. Never seeing the sun isn't fun so no more of that business. Volunteering has helped to fill in the afternoon hours and after having an action packed year last year, I am ok will a little time juggling. On Mondays I volunteer at the Boys and Girls after school program where I am a Girl Scout Leader for an awesome group of middle school ladies. From service projects to field trips, you name it and we do it! The Boys and Girls Club held its annual "Trivia Night" at Duncan Aviation in Lincoln on November 5th and so I was thrilled that I was asked to parlay my volunteer work at Park Middle School in to hosting Trivia Night. Former Husker, Aaron Davis and I had a great time reeling off movie trivia at the fundraiser.

In October I was honored to get to emcee the Miss Omaha/Miss Douglas Co. Pageant. This is an incredible pageant and I'm particularly bias towards it because I was a titleholder here for 2 years and Marianne is like family to me. It was great to catch up with and root for all of my gal pals. It was also wonderful to chat with Miss NE 2010 Teresa Scanlan. We usually chat on the phone since she is busy zooming all over the state so it was great to see her in person! Teresa is doing an A-MAZING job, I'm so proud of her and am loving watching her year as it unfolds. Watch out Vegas, Nebraska is coming!

I was one of the celebrity judges for "Lincoln's Got Talent" to benefit the Lincoln Community Playhouse. Here with Steffany, the incredible young twirler/dancer! She took first place in the teen division.

Aside from providing a platform in which to promote "World Peace" (joking) the most incredible aspect that the Miss America Organization has to offer is the caliber of women involved and the friends you make while involved. Honest Abe, the women I competed with locally and nationally are some of my dearest friends. At the top of that list is Christina Keegan, or as some of you know her, Miss Nevada 2009. She's just Nev to me! Love the girl. In addition to being my buddy, she's also good friends with my fiance. In fact, Christina had a hand in helping Charlie pick out my engagement ring. Sneaky, sneaky.

So I was thrilled to get a phone call that she was going to make a pit stop in Nebraska to visit me on her trek to New York. It was a quick trip but it was awesome to get to catch up and to plan our reunion with all of our other favorites at Miss America in January!

Happy Birthday Fiance/I'm so happy he doesn't live 6 hours away from me anymore! Charlie now lives in Lincoln and is part of the sports team at KOLN 1011 News. Competition I know :)

Also, one of best gal pals celebrated her bachelorette party in the Windy City! I had a blast and a half tearing up Chicago with all of my favorite girls. Only a few short weeks until Miss Amy will be Mrs. Arganbright!

I came across this as a posting that someone shared on Facebook and I loved it and thought I should share it.

TO BE LIST

I am a self-proclaimed compulsive "To Do" list maker. I make multiple lists a day...during commercial breaks, while I'm watching tv, laying in bed, eating dinner etc. etc. Sometimes I make lists and add things I've already done just to have the thrill of checking it off! Extreme I know. The lists are sometimes written on paper, sometimes in my planner, sometimes on scripts but often times, mental checklists in my head. Lists of errands to run, goals to attain, grocery lists, people to call, things to send. As I mentioned, it is a bit of quirk. Don't judge, you know you do it too :)
To get away from this, I'm going to try to swap out my choice of lists. Easing up of the "To Do-ing" and focus more on the "To Be-ing".

Life in the Aftermath
It's been awhile since I last blogged. Almost 3 months in fact! Some of my friends had urged me to write, not as a "former" but more just for some commentary. Maybe someone will read this or maybe it will end up in the abyss that is the interwebs, either way, here it is.

This blog started off as a documentation in my journey and travels as Miss Nebraska 2009. Well that crazy/wonderful train is over and now its time to ease into some new adventures (or in my case, dive head first!) Closing the chapter of Miss Nebraska my phone is no longer buzzing like a doorbell on Halloween, I don't have to haul a moving closet and tiara in my car with bobbypins and sharpies on hand at all time. A lot of people have asked me if I miss it? In some ways yes, but mostly...no. I don't mean it in a callous way, more in a fulfilled/I did what I needed to do sort of way. It is really nice to just breathe. be. I've never been very good at that, but I guess this is the best time to figure it out. So even though the venture was incredible life goes on. Hallelujah. I know we always find ourselves in transitions and while typically they are uncomfortable this is far from it. Its glorious. I'm enjoying being on the other end of things and serving as a volunteer to the wonderful MAO program as opposed to being the "Miss". So here is to taking off the tiara... and moving on...

When it comes to transitioning into the workforce full time again, working at the tv station is fabulous. I'm stilling trying to find the perfect balance of caffeine and sleep to manage the 2:50 a.m. wakeup call but anchoring the morning and midday with Luke has been a blast thus far.
Oddly enough I've still had about two different speaking engagements or volunteer opportunities a week. This summer I was busy helping out with the Gold and Silver Awards ceremonies for Girl Scouts and gearing up to be a Studio 2-B Youth facilitator at Park Middle School this fall. I helped out with fundraising for the new recreation center in Ogallala and have been attending weekly Kiwanis meetings. I was thrilled to helped out with the Dancing with Stars Benefit for the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company and the Nebraska Broadcasters Association gala.

Its been awesome to be able to spend some real time with friends and family too. I've got to road trip with some of my besties to weddings this summer and gear up fora dear friends wedding this fall with multiple showers.

Speaking of weddings.....

The biggest announcement...I'm ENGAGED!! Yep, I'm getting hitched. Not sure when or where but I can tell you to who, and he's wonderful. Perfect for me in fact. Charlie proposed on July 29th at a park in Lincolns Haymarket and every day before and since then has been awesome. We are a work in progress when it comes to the logistics of the big day but I think we have the important part right! For now we are just trying to enjoy the engagement and the planning! Thanks to everyone for all of the love and congratulations.

So there you have it, thats what is going on in a very condensed nutshell. I'm leading a "normal life" whatever that really means. haha who am I kidding?

Anyone who is close to me knows that cupcakes/frosting/all things sparkly and girly make me ridiculously happy. So as my year as Miss Nebraska is dwindling down (4 hours left in fact) I am so very grateful to all of those around me who are surrounding me with fun and love and of course, FROSTING! From my host family throwing me a festive party, to the Miss NE Brunch, I would say that today has been nothing short of amazing. Honestly, this ENTIRE year has been nothing short of awesome.
A first grader asked me, "Miss Nebraska do you get to keep the crown?". Yes I do. However, I am totally fine with not having to wear it again. I think I was getting a bald spot, kidding. What I mean by that is, I am completely at peace and happy with my year. I feel like I accomplished all of goals: to further the program, encourage young women, advocate for the state and make the most of every moment. Am I emotional? Yes. Will I cry tonight? My magic 8 ball says yes. But it's not because I don't get to "be" Miss Nebraska anymore it is because I am so grateful for this experience and it truly is closing one chapter and opening another.
I don't know who Miss Nebraska 2010 will be but I do know whoever she, she has an incredible/rollercoaster of a year to look forward to. I would be 100% thrilled and supportive of any of the young women to take the job.
Good luck ladies! I can't wait to announce the new Miss Nebraska 2010!

Congratulations to preliminary talent winner Devin Howell! What an entertaining piano piece! Also, a big congratulations to Teresa Scanlan for her breathtaking presentation in evening gown.

Preliminary Night One=Success. We truly could not have asked for a better way to kick off the competition! The production numbers were spectacular and the contestants were simply amazing! I'm so proud of each and every one of them. All week long I have been the glorified cheerleader and self-appointed Mother Hen and that is because I am truly so proud of each and everyone of these young women. They are all so unique and I know that any one of them would be a fabulous representative. I was more nervous last night than I was last year competing! In numerous interviews I have been asked "who is going to take it? Who will win?" and I honest to Betsy, whole heartedly and utterly do not have a clue! What I do know, is these ladies will continue to shine it on. I'm enjoying my last 24 hours as Miss Nebraska and have been surrounded by all of the people I love the most. I'm truly enjoying every last minute! I even got inducted in to the "cool kids" club aka the hostesses inner circle. They awarded me with frosting(my fav) and a rhinestoned spoon. I feel so honored. Although I'm having a blast, that doesn't mean the waterworks haven't set in... I teared up at Rotary, cried at the parents brunch, my video. Yada yada yada. They are happy tears I swear. I will get it together.

It's show time folks! After 4 full days of rehearsals, luncheons, appearances, interviews, community service projects and no sleep it officially time for the preliminary events! I'm beyond proud of the young women, thrilled with the production of the show, a ball of emotions and so pumped to get out on the stage and rock it with all of these incredible ladies!
3 more days until my job as Miss Nebraska comes to an end...I'm going to live it up!

My incredible host family

Before any updates, I need to say a big, gigantic, THANK YOU, to the Volz family. For the past 5 years they have opened their home up to me every summer during Miss Nebraska week. This year they have truly been my home away from home. It was so nice to have a comfy place to stop at for the night in between trips up and down I-80. Thanks for letting me raid your fridge, unload all my beauty products in the bathroom and for being a great support system. I love you all!

Tuesday was chalk full of rehearsals during the day. Running production numbers, swimsuit walking patterns and evening gown posing consumed most of the day. It was awesome to see the girls are keeping their energy up and seem to be enjoying all of the choreography thrown at them! Sleep deprivation hasn't kicked in yet!
Later that evening we were able to celebrate Memorial Day with a picnic between the contestants and their host families. Nothing like wolfing down some KFC. I kid. I kid. We played a hilarious ice breaker game that involved toilet paper (don't ask, long story!) but it allowed us to get to hear some interesting tid-bits about each of the young ladies. All of hostesses, host families and board members were recognized for their service and commitment to the program. We truly are so very lucky to such amazing volunteers in Nebraska. You'll be happy to hear I refrained from unleashing the waterworks after the board gave me some end of the year gifts. Beautiful weather, delicious dinner and fabulous company...I really couldn't have asked for a better evening. On to more rehearsals on Tuesday.

Miss Nebraska 2010 is in this picture! Who will she be?

I feel like a little kid excited about Christmas (minus the whole blubbering/crying bit I might do at the end of the week) because I've been so looking forward to Miss Nebraska week and it is finally here! I was honored to share the stage today with some of the most intelligent, driven, compassionate and talented young women of Nebraska. I can honestly and whole heartedly say I know any one of these young ladies would be an incredible representative as Miss Nebraska 2010. We kicked off the day with brunch and then made our way to Conestoga Mall for opening ceremonies. There, the ladies introduced themselves and their little sisters to the audience. It also gave them the opportunity to get acquainted with hostesses and host family for the week.
The recipients of JoDee LynDee Paiton Hastings Princess Memorial Community Service Scholarship were also announced. Last year, I was the recipient of this award and it holds a very special place in my heart as it in given by Scotty and Johnathon Hastings in remembrance of JoDee, Lyndee and Paiton. The award recognizes the young lady who exhibits commitment, dedication and service within her community. Congratulations to Jessica States, Miss Lake McConaughy, the recipient of the scholarship for her work with "Net Smart: Being Safe in the Web." In addition, a big congratulations to Devin Howell, Miss Omaha, for receiving second place for her commitment to "Bullying Prevention."

After an evening of talent rehearsal I am back at the Volz's preparing for a big day of appearances and rehearsals bright and early tomorrow. I will continue to post pictures but you can also find them on the Miss Nebraska website!

You would think after a YEAR of practice I would learn how to pack all of my pink bags efficiently, alas, I have not. It is 10:30pm and I am still loading up the Miss Nebraska ride with gobs of accessories, garment bags and gowns. My 2:45am wake up call is going to hurt! Anyway, the bright side is I am leaving for Miss Nebraska week in North Platte. Bittersweet, yes. Emotional, yes. I know it will be an incredible and memorable week and I can't wait to see all of the amazing young women who have been preparing so diligently for this week to arrive. I will be updating my blog, tweeting and uploading pictures to Facebook to document the week so stay tuned!

At every event my belief and confidence in the sponsorship is always solidified because of the incredible people, products and mission of Artistry. Things I've learned

Nothing to profound, but in my 2nd to last week as Miss Nebraska my schedule has been jam packed with different appearances, here are just a few observations.

Dance parties by yourself in the car are totally acceptable and encouraged.

Kindergartner's ask the most difficult questions!

Sleep is overrated.

You've got love the job and your message with everything you've got or else it will be a long year.

You learn alot about yourself in the quiet hours in the car by yourself, lost in thought.

Nebraskans truly are incredible and hospitality isn't dead.

A mass hug from 50 elementary school kids can totally turn your day around.

The people who really care about you understand that you are busy and will forgive you for the crazy schedule.

Clippy barrettes work better than bobby pins to hold the crown on your head.

Everyone has a story tell, a cross to bare and a lesson to learn.

Never wear a strapless dress when visiting preschoolers.

Chimney Rock is beautiful with a sunrise behind it.

Memorizing every Starbucks along I-80 and having them know your name/order when you get there has its perks.

Heels and rodeos don't mix.

Amazing, absolutely, fabulous...for whatever reason are words I've fallen in to habit saying in response to people. Some of the 0ther 52 contestants at Miss America agreed they do this too!
There is 0 phone service in Thayer county.

Having a room full of attentive high school students is so rewarding.

I can win a frog race, flip pancakes, race a derby car and play golf all wearing a crown.

I'm not sure how to measure this unforgettable year, but I have EXACTLY one month to figure it out. That's right, in one month there will be a new young lady embarking on defining her year as Miss Nebraska. Until then, I'll keep working on mine :)

Cornhusker Kiwanis

I was invited to speak at a meeting and I ended up joining!

Thanks to KLKNtv news anchor, Rod Fowler, I am now the youngest member of the Cornhusker Kiwanis Club. I went to speak for an appearance....and I ended up joining! I was looking for other activities to get involved in the Lincoln community for post-Miss NE and I think I found just what I was looking for. I just wanted to extend another thank you to the Cornhusker Kiwanis group for inviting me to be a part of the organization and I'm so excited to lend a hand in the city of Lincoln. Schools Galore

School is almost out for the summer and guess what that means? Field trips, awards nights and school assemblies. Cue: MISS NEBRASKA

That's right, its a busy time of the year (when isn't really?!) for Miss Nebraska appearances! I've been tooling around to all of the nooks and crannies of the state visiting many incredible schools. Meeting all of the educators and faculty is so much fun and its a blast to be welcomed with open arms into schools all across the state to share my message on individuality and leadership. However, it's kiddos that keep the job interesting! They are always so inquisitive and ask the best questions....both thought provoking and humorous. I've decided kindergartner's are the best at keeping me on my toes! Any way, back by popular demand I have decided to add to the list of questions I have received the past few weeks. Enjoy!

: Do you have a dog? My family has a little Lhasa apso named Jessie. This was quickly followed by how old is your dog? Has your dog ever been hurt? Does your dog bite? Do you sleep with your dog? My dogs name is Ernie...so on and so forth :)

: Are you more country or more city? I'm a mix of both, I'm a small town girl with big city dreams!

: How many speeding tickets have you got? None thank goodness! We won't mention the warnings! KIDDING

: Again, are you married/have kids? No way jose

: Were you scared when you were competing? I had a major adrenaline rush but it was more excited butterflies as opposed to nerves.

: Were the contestants nice? They were better than that, they were amazing! I keep in touch with a lot of them regularly.

: Do your feet hurt wearing those shoes? I can run, haul 4 bags, a computer case, dance shoes and balance a crown on my head in these shoes! But yes, I'm flat footed so they get a little sore at the end of the day.

: Whats your favorite color? Sparkly

: Have you met Ndamukong Suh? Unfortunately my shout out to him at Miss America didn't get me a meeting, but I still have my fingers crossed!

: Do you wear your crown when you report the news? Nope, I hang up the tiara.

: Can you yodel? (Sidenote: Miss Nebraska 2008 Gretchen Bergquist is a phenomenal singer and can also yodel! Something the kids have not forgotten about from her appearances last year! ) NO..but sometimes I try to give them my best attempt :)

: Do you get to keep the crown when you are done? I sure do

: Does your mom know you are Miss Nebraska? I think she has caught on! Just teasing, Momma Lisa is the best mom ever. She keeps me organized and moving in the right direction, plus hugs and long car ride phone conversations.

:Are you on facebook...followed by can I text you? Wait...what? Aren't you 5 years old? Yes I'm on facebook! Friend me!

: Do you ever sleep in the crown? No, aside from the night that I won! But I do have a retainer..hot.

Okay friends, picture this:
A day with Miss Nebraska Princess day. Doing fun/light on-stage questions with the little ladies. I asked this darling little lady who she liked better, Backstreet Boys or N'Sync? Seemed like a fair question. I myself, would have picked NSync (Justin Timberlake), but I wait for her answer. Cue the crickets. ALL 30 little girls look at me like I have 3 heads. They don't know who these legendary boy bands are!!! Cue my gigantic sigh. I'm SO not with it. I try to quickly recover and ask which is their favorite Jonas Brother...she says Nick. I say enough with my failing attempt at teen heart throb trivia and more PRINCESS DAY!

You all know how much I love hanging with Princesses. Seriously, I adore hanging out with little ladies who are full of moxy and sass because they are hilarious and have so much energy! Hence my platform I suppose. I was so excited when the Miss Nebraska Little Sisters Alumnae decided to host "A Day with Miss Nebraska Princess Party". The fundraiser helped to raise money for the Miss Nebraska talent award scholarship. Being a recipient of this award, I recognize the importance of this incredible scholarship for the contestants and I was so grateful to JJ's Bridal and the Quality Inn and Suits for helping to make it possible. 30 little girls showed up and participated in various different activities including painting nails, making sashes and necklaces, modeling gowns and onstage interviews. The best part of the day was probably the Miss America evening gown modeling. In terms of runway music, I learned Selena Gomez is way cooler than Miley Cyrus but Taylor Swift reigns supreme...she's my favorite as well. Love Story was the jam of choice.

The glitz and the glamour of the day is so much fun however it is so rewarding to watch these little ladies between 6-11 years old show off their unique talents and confidence. The day was all about feeling good and confident about who they are, and boy were they ever! I wish we would have had this fundraiser prior to Miss America, they probably could have given me some walking tips for evening gown!

FUTURE MISS NEBRASKA'S

Now that I am officially back in the technology age I thought I would share a snippet of April until I can give you a big debriefing later this weekend! I apologize for not posting lately but life as I know it is pretty chaotic right now (isn't it for everyone?!?!) Actually the biggest/lamest excuse is the fact that I have moved (more on that later) and I have not had internet for about 2 weeks. Now that I have powered through moving and performing my duty as "tech support" I am up and blogging again!
I have been very occupied with Miss Nebraska duties and I have to say, every appearance, every crowd and every venue has been varied which has made for a lot of fun memories this month. I thought I would try to hit some of the highlights though!

-I was so honored to be a guest presenter at the Artistry skincare convention in Lincoln, NE. As many of you know, Artistry is a new sponsor of the Miss America Organization I'm so thrilled to see the involvement trickle down to the states. The Artistry branch in Lincoln is incredibly strong and full of very motivated business people and leaders. It was pleasure to share my work with Uniquely ME, my experiences at Miss America as well the MAO partnership with the incredible skin care line. The representatives even blared "Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night" and created a slide show of my year...I have to say the Miss America throw back was pretty awesome and the energy in the room was fantastic!

-I also participated as a "walker" in the American Heart Associations official kick off to annual Capitol City Heart Walk. I huffed and puffed on the treadmill and helped sign up walkers for the upcoming event on April 24th. The cause is incredible but it was also a blast and half to catch up with former Miss Nebraska, Tina Foehlinger and former Miss Omaha, Alexis Geist. I'm honored to call both of these incredible women my friends and was beyond excited when they asked me to help with the event as they are both representatives for the American Heart Association.

-Finally I have toured numerous schools (more photos to come) and even got some time to enjoy the production of "The Wizard of Oz" at the Lied Center with some of the Miss Nebraska board members. It was an incredible date night ladies! Sorry Charlie.
-Tommorow I am heading out to Hebron and Davenport to visit numerous schools, then on to a Teammates event, followed by Photo shoot for the Miss NE program book, a Princess day (we all know how much I LOVE those) seriously, and then more schools and a blood bank fundraiser next week! I will post pics as soon as I can!

My Best Days Are Ahead of Me...

Okay, not to get all "world peace-y" on everyone but I have to honestly say one of the best things about my Miss America experience was walking away with some incredible new besties. One of which is Miss Nevada, Christina Keegan, or Nev as I say. I had a particularly awesome gab fest with her this weekend and I'll spare you all of the gory details but we may or may not have discussed all of the shenanigans of our lives and jobs post Miss America. Coming to the realization that we will never again be as bronzed or toned as we were then and that's ok...opting for dessert and yoga over lifting and protein shakes now. Future plans, plotting reunion trips and discussing the mixed emotions that come as former-dom comes flying at us. Essentially, I just love that she gets where I'm at and I'm so grateful to have her as a sounding board to talk about all of the changes going on in our lives. Not just in the pageant realm, she truly is a wonderful friend and person. I've said it once and I'll say it again, never in my life will I be surrounded with the caliber of women, in regard to talent and intellect, that I was while I was at Miss America...well, not until our reunion anyway :)

That being said, I think you could really sum up this season of life as transition time more than anything. I know many equate change=bad, but its not that way at all! Although its hard to relinquish the reigns sometimes and go with the flow, I am truly enjoying all of the new opportunities and plans unfolding around me. Every day is a delicate balance to juggle work life/Miss Nebraska duties/Brittany time/missing my bf/ family life/professional goals/fun time but I guess this just means I'm at the threshold of adulthood...dun dun dun....welcome to the future I guess!
Keeping up with the demands of my new job and Miss Nebraska duties has been pretty seamless, minus the whole sleeping bit! For those of you who try to call me in the afternoon, I promise I'm not ignoring you, I'm probably sleeping. You see I've really reverted back to sleeping patterns of a toddler, and lets be honest, who doesn't enjoy a good nap? Since I'm a night person I feel like I'm being punished if go to bed at 7 o'clock soooo I don't! I go to bed at 11ish, I blame Charlie for late night phone dates, and I get up at 3. After working out, running errands, Miss Nebraska appearances, I typically pass out on the couch like a little child. My naps are coma style the longest nap to date is officially 5 hours, impressive right? The new job is incredible though. Every day it's challenging on a professional and personal level but I'm so incredibly grateful for the opportunity and am really embracing this new phase of life. (KLKN Channel 8 ABC morning and midday show..shameless plug to watch..sorry!)

Another announcement: I've moved! In Brittany fashion I decided to add to the cluster that is my life and move. I must say I love having a girl palace to come to, my closet is immaculate and my kitchen canisters are brimming with coffee and candy. perfection. I wish I was more of creative person like my Mom, but I'm really trying to dabble in decorating! I can only aspire to reach her level, but I can proudly say that I have hung pictures and valances and even arranged nick-knacks without hurting anyone or myself for that matter! Maybe there is hope for me yet.

However, with my alone time I've had way too much time to reflect on my year and I'll find myself tearing up while vacuuming (another new obsession). There is a huge thank you/reflection note coming...not sure when I will get up the gumption to do it. So it remains on stand-by. Truly, each day that goes by I realize how truly blessed I am and what an incredible year this has been in every aspect from professional to personal, you name it it's been incredible. I can't even begin to sum up all of the gratitude and appreciation I have for all of the people and organizations who have touched my life this year. I'm never for a second not felt appreciative and thankful for this year, I'm beyond beyond beyond grateful.

Once again, a good tune always sums things up well for me. My incredible host mom, Michele, suggested this song to me and she was right, it seems to fit this whole transition bit pretty well!

Go on, go ahead and guess....because I certainly can't!!!!
Miss Nebraska & Miss Nebraska Outstanding Teen Orientation was certainly a success in every sense of the word. Hard to believe this was my 6th (yowza) Orientation in North Platte and yet it was probably the most memorable. I was so impressed with all of the 14 contestants, if you don't have tickets for the pageant in June you definitely want to purchase them soon! I was so proud to see so many talented, poised, beautiful and genuine girls.
All of the technicalities of turning in advertisements and paper work went very smoothly and I was so thrilled to have my interview coach Mr. Don Baker there to present his seminar and work with contestants as well.
It was really interesting to be on the other side of things this year. I was pretty much the glorified cheerleader/momma hen...a role that I am more than happy to take on! My year as Miss NE is dwindling down, 2 months to go, and I definitely am starting to feel the mix of emotions that go with it. I will spare all of you the walk down melancholy road (we WILL be taking the walk at some point, sorry!) and say how honored I am to get to be inching my way to "former" club by helping all of the 2010 contestants. I told all of the ladies, I am seriously, very seriously their biggest fan. I'm so excited I have been able to work with so many of the girls already, from fb notes, coffee dates or questions over the phone, I've had a wonderful time helping and getting to know all of them during the journey. I know this summer will be incredible!
On the job front I am absolutely LOVING my new position as morning/midday anchor at Channel 8 KLKNtv in Lincoln. The transition has been pretty seamless and I'm continuing to learn more about being an effective journalist and communicator every day. I will be very busy this month with appearances as well, and I will keep all of you updated with my adventures.

So it's not so much a secret as it is an announcement!!!

Now that the dust has officially settled after Miss America, I found myself in a "transition" period if you will. No longer were people asking "are you nervous?" about competing at Miss America, they were saying "congrats on top 10....so what now?" Well I'm pleased to say that I officially have an answer to the question. I have a new job! I was promoted to the Morning/Midday News Anchor at KLKN Channel 8 the ABC news station in Lincoln! I'm so incredibly excited about this opportunity. The station has been nothing short of amazing in supporting me in my role as Miss Nebraska and I'm thrilled to be able to commit to them as a full time anchor. The schedule will be 3am-12 Monday-Friday...most people balk at the hours but since I've been juggling the job of Miss Nebraska and reporter by almost a year now I've learned to function on coffee/naps/adrenaline. I'm so excited about the new job venture as this will be a professional challenge. I will have to work diligently every day to improve my skills as a journalist but I'm more than ready to commit to the work it entails. Wish me luck and tune in to Channel 8 morning and middays!

OGALLALA: named for the Oglala Band of the Dakota Sioux. Town incorporated in 1884.

Above is the definition of the town of Ogallala. According to a tourist booklet, it is the cowboy capital, Home of largest lake in the state "Big Mac", The Kingsley Dam and who can forget about the Crystal Palace Review at Front Street? (A full-on shoot out, frontier themed musical, and a pair of museums dedicated to the Old West.) I am NOT making this up folks! By my own definition Ogallala is home. From memories that started 19 years ago, When I marched in my pink floral dress and mickey mouse watch to my first day of Kindergarten in Mrs. Thompkins class at Prairie View Elementary. Its the community where I played "ditch em" until 10:30 at night with every kid in the neighborhood and our parents weren't at all concerned about us roaming around. Its the same town where I taught swimming lessons at the outdoor Swimming pool in the summer and then performed in the Crystal Palace Review in the Evening. Its also the place where I not so fondly got doused with eggs and vinegar during freshman initiation but was later crowned Homecoming Queen on the same field my little brother now plays football. Yep, its home.
Hailing from the cowboy capital I was honored to serve as the co-emcee for Ogallala's 125th Birthday Celebration! It was such an honor to get to partake in the festivity with neighbors, teachers and old classmates as well as dignitaries and government officials. I hope you enjoy the pictures from the bash!

Miss Nebraska Does the Crown Hurt Your Head???????

Most recently I have been hitting the roadways, visiting every nook and cranny of the state speaking at schools. I have been talking and talking and talking and listening and giggling with itty bitty kindergartner's decked out in Dora the Explorer gear to High School students applying to colleges! Although I primarily speak about loving the skin you're in/self-confidence/making good decisions my message is always altered a bit depending on the audience. But regardless of the crowd, the question and answer part of the presentation is always the kicker! As Miss Nebraska, I am an open book, from what my stance is on the economic stimulus is to well...what kind of cereal did I eat this morning?! Let me tell you, the little tykes ask the darndest things. I thought I would share a compilation of some of the frequently asked questions!

Hmmmm...that's a good one

Are those real diamonds? They are real rhinestones!
Do you live in the White House? I live in my white Miss Nebraska car, not quite as spacious.
Are you the queen of Nebraska? I never thought about it that way, kind of has a ring to it!
Do you have a mom? Sometimes followed by, Are you a mom? Yes, my mom and best friend is Lisa and to the second question obviously, Yikes and no!
Did you get grounded when you little? I didn't ever get grounded but my parents did want to sell me when I was a bossy 4 year old.
Miss Nebraska my brother is as old as you and one time I went to the zoo and my favorite color is purple.....more of a statement then a question really!
Will you be my prom date? I signed something about that.

Silly but great stuff. Competing at Miss America was stellar and all but seriously, this is the best part of my job. Its the days when you've had three year olds climbing all over you, group hugs from a 3rd grade class and laughter (not eye rolling) from high schoolers that you know that you are really making a difference. It's an incredible and humbling feeling to be able to talk and interact with all of the dynamic young people in the state. To all of the Miss Nebraska contestants out there, your year is not gowns and crowns and glory and glamour. This (The schools, the children, your message) ladies, is the job. An incredible job by the way.

I owe a big bear hug to Davanne Moul & Michele Volz for throwing the incredible bash at the Depot Resteraunt in North Platte! Thank you for making the party so special, next to my momma you two ladies are the "women" in my life!

It was an amazing evening to catch up and fill everyone in on the nitty gritty details of my Miss America experience. What we did, celebs I saw, questions from the interview, most nerve wracking moment, what Mario's dimples looked like in person...you get the picture!

True Life: I Hang Out with Princesses

"I'm quite certain if given a cape and the right Tiara..I could rule the world"

I know I say this about every appearance but seriously, for real, attending the "Princess For a Day" at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island is ranked right at the top of my Miss Nebraska favorite days! 500 little princesses (yes you heard me right, 500) came to the Museum for a day of make believe and fun. It just so happens that the Museum looks like a castle inside and volunteers at the event set up 15 different stations that pertained to being a "princess." The little ladies got to decorate crowns, attend a tea, take dance lessons etc. Essentially this was like walking into a Disney movie! This coming from the 24 year who still likes the Disney store. Don't judge. It must be a girl thing but I never really outgrew being enamored with with the glamour surrounding princesses. Sparkles, wands, pixie dust, tiaras...what's not to love?! I was so excited to be included in the event and spent the afternoon taking pictures and talking with all of the young Nebraska royalty. The afternoon went by so quickly because Princess commentary is quite entertaining! Although Cinderella was by far the most popular costume, when I asked the lil' ladies who their favorite Disney Princess was, Belle dominated the poll. Belle was always my fav as well.
Sidenote: I had a major tantrum when I was 5 years old (weird) with my mother on Halloween over my Belle costume. It had snowed that year, my mom insisted I wear turtleneck to keep warm. Sassy little me thought it was ridiculous "Belle did NOT wear a turtleneck." insert tantrum here. I digress.
I was trying to pinpoint why this appearance was so memorable and the reason I came up with is this; moxy. The confident attitudes and enthusiasm that young girls exude is just incredible. It's the elementary school age when little girls are so comfortable and confident in their own skin. No question is too silly to ask, no outfit too obnoxious and they believe they really could be Cinderella if they wanted to. The point is, somewhere along the way a lot of young women lose that moxy and belief and comfort in themselves. . You don't have to be a princess, you don't even have to like princesses but its so important to hold on to that confidence in yourself and your ability and your dreams...whatever they may be. So cheers to all of the little ladies who believe in themselves!!!

From One Nebraskan to Another

You can take the man out of Nebraska, but you can't take Nebraska out of the man. I could write a book about how incredible Dr. George Garlick is...he's a physicist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, leader and a fellow Nebraskan. I met Dr. Garlick at the "Evening of Dreams' Gala at Miss America, and we talked and talked about the Miss America Organization as well as my work with promoting my platform across the state. You can imagine my surprise when I returned to Nebraska from Las Vegas to find out my first booking would be with Dr. Garlick in his hometown of Curtis, Nebraska!
During my visit to Curtis, I got to meet with elementary and junior high students. Later I presented to Medicine Valley High School students before heading to take a tour of Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture and explore the campus that Dr. Garlick had restored. A big thank you to Britney aka Thing One, for making the arrangements and taking Kathy and I on an adventure around campus! That evening, I joined Dr. Garlick at the NCTA Student Center. I got to speak about my experiences in the Miss America Organization as well as the importance of promoting self-esteem in young women. It was an honor to get to listen to Dr. Garlick discuss his experiences of growing up in Nebraska as well as talk about his new book "Journey to Truth." But the biggest surprise of the evening was the generous donation that Dr. Garlick provided to Miss Nebraska Scholarship Organization. Yes, once again I did jump around...I might have teared up too! The sponsorship will allow me to travel to rural communities to promote an anti-tobacco campaign to youth. This is such a precious gift because it will allow an important message to reach the youth of Nebraska that otherwise wouldn't have been possible!
I'm so incredibly thankful and excited to continue to represent the Miss Nebraska Organization across the state. THANK YOU DR. GARLICK!!

I had the pleasure of helping with the 96.9 kx "Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon" all proceeds benefit Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, our area's leading treatment center for children with cancer. 96.9 kx is the sister radio station to KLKNtv Channel 8 in Lincoln where I work as a reporter and so once again, it was awesome that my two worlds could collide and I could help with the radiothon before heading to the station to report. A big thank you to Hoss & Carol for having me as a guest and helping to raise funds for such an incredible organization.

First off; I must confess, I am totally the girl that the candy stores cater to when mooshy gooshy holidays like said "Valentines Day" roll around. I admit. I fall head over heels for the flowers, candy and other terms of endearments. Truth Defense.
However ladies, I'm totally behind the band wagon of "find the guy who treats you like his Valentine everyday" not just on the designated day of love in February. Check....but I still LOVE Valentines day.
On another note, get ready for lots and lots of updates! Ever since I got back from Miss America I have been on the ground running, driving, appearing, reporting, speaking, not sleeping. You get the idea.

The most important gift anyone can give a girl is a belief in her own power as an individual, the value of her dreams and respect her as a person with potential..

How do I even begin to debrief? I feel a novel coming on, get ready! After spending the most amazing 2 weeks of my life competing at Miss America I am completely and utterly happy and exhausted! The adrenaline of making Top 10 is gone and the deliriousness has moved in. Case in point; I've slept for 13 hours two days in a row now, and have a wicked sinus infection. Cute right? Also, after two weeks of being coiffed and primped I’m officially on beauty detox. Sitting in my sweats (they are still rhinestoned, lets be honest) and my ponytail, I am totally and completely in awe of what just happened. I. COMPETED. AT. MISS. AMERICA. Pinch me. I have a plethora of memories but the things that stick out the most about the experience are the MAO class of 2010. My dream. The people I love most.
Not to get cheesy and "world peace-y" on you but it was truly an honor and a gift to share the Miss America experience with 52 amazing young women. Seriously, I know I will never again come in contact with the caliber of intelect, talent and drive in a group of individuals. It was an incredibly feeling to also be surrounded by women who understand what you are doing and going through. As a miss state we all share the same desires, maintain the same crazy schedules and juggle various duties required of us. They get it, I miss them and we are already planning our reunion! Cue Girls On the Dance Floor.

On a reflective note, how many people actually GET to see their dreams played out? I did. No, I didn’t walk away with the job, but I got to experience a moment in time on the stage that I had played and re-played in my head since I was a little girl. Something I firmly believe was reaffirmed on the stage that night. There is a bigger plan. If I had given in to all of the people who thought I was silly to keep competing or didn’t have my priorities in a line I might never have got to feel the adrenaline rush of hearing my name called on national tv. If I hadn’t competed five years, and had I won Miss NE at 20 I might not have got to perform on that stage. Had I not had the awesome opportunity to work as a reporter I wouldn’t have been nearly as ready to talk politics with Rush Limbaugh in the interview. Every choice, every encounter led me to this. There are many great moments in life, this isn’t the end all be all but it was certainly awesome to hear my name announced!
Of course I had to be the last name called into the top 14, (giving all of the NE contingent a coronary, poor Charlie is scarred for life) but when they say your name…wow. I know I danced and fist pumped, the same way I did when I won Miss Nebraska. I get excited! The best part was knowing and feeling the support from all of my friends and family. You are only as good as the people that surround you, and I felt “held” that evening in love and belief. From friends and family who made the trek to see me, those who sent me good luck cards and Facebook notes, KLKN tv for following my journey and those who left messages of encouragement, I felt all of your prayers.
I just hope you can comprehend how much it meant to me. Know it. This is me hugging you through the screen. In every phase of competition I felt so happy, so alive and so thankful. Everyone deserves that moment, and its something that I will have forever. You bet I’ll be the goofy granny who tells the story of “that time at Miss America I got to rock it in a swimsuit” and come on, we made history ☺ I’ll take it.

At 24 years old I’m still as in love and in awe of the Miss America program and what it represents. Thank you to Sam Haskell and Art McMaster and all of the rest of the Miss America board for providing such an incredible experience. I will forever be apart of this organization…as a director, hostess, travel companion, whatever. Sign me up.
While I know I could have done the job of Miss America, I’m not upset the path was not planned for me. Caressa is an incredible young woman and will no doubt be an outstanding Miss America, I’m honored to have shared the stage with her and can’t wait to watch her year unfold! There are other things in store for me. I still get to represent my fabulous state, and I get to experience all of the adventures with the people I love the most. I can’t wait to see what is next!

All in all it was a fabulous week. My 24th birthday, Top 10, my best friend got engaged (congrats Amy & Kyle) and many new opportunities on the horizon!

Preliminary Night One

Wow! I can't believe night one of the competition is officially done! I competed in On Stage Question where I was asked about how to positively influence young girls and encourage self acceptance when they are subjected to negative media and press. I always have temporary amnesia after I answer a question...I seriously don't remember what I say, but everyone I spoke with said it went fabulously and it felt good! No nerves, just pure excitement.

I don't have pictures of visitation but I was completely overwhelmed with support and love when I saw the Nebraska delegation tonight. It felt so good to hug my family! I can't wait for the rest of the rambunctious crew to show up.
Its midnight now and I have another busy busy day ahead of me. Thanks again for all of the prayers and support, keep them coming!

With my Bestie Miss Nevada getting ready to strut our stuff on the catwalk at the Fashion Show Mall. It was incredible because we were in a glass encased elevator that rose to the main floor of the casino. After my inner model came out we went to dinner at Buco De Beppo.

I Can't Believe I'm Here!!!

I'm here safe and sound and so far, it is EVERYTHING I hoped and more! My grandfather and my Dad dropped me and all 5 of my bags off at the Denver airport this morning. I had a wonderful flight and arrived at the Planet Hollywood with all of bags in tow. My fabulous roomie Miss Massachusetts and I are settling in nicely, LOTS and LOTS clothes and shoes and accesories in this room! As soon as I checked in this morning I had swimsuit and production outfit fittings and interviews with TLC later in the afternoon. We capped off the day with an official welcome ceremony and informational meetings.
The plan is early to bed tonight because we have a full agenda tomorrow. I-hop pancake breakfast, rehearsals, interviews with the TLC and Gondola rides at the Venetian!
I'm having a blast and I'll continue to keep you updated... much love!!!

Ogallala Send-Off

Ogallala has a population that boasts a little more than 5,000 people. It's comfortable and busy. It's quiet but driven by hard working people. It's home. Today, I got to enjoy send off party round two right in the heart of the western part of the state, in Ogallala.
I didn't model any of my competition wardrobe or perform my talent, I just got to chat and laugh with the people that know me best. My neighbors and teachers came as well as children I used to babysit. It was awesome to be surrounded with so much support and positive energy. Thank you to Sally Haythorn and all of the volunteers who made the day so special.

Energy and the Future

In relation with Miss America's "Go Green Initiative" I thought I would share with the blog my experience with renewable energy and the future. As an undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska Lincoln I was able to work extensively with a core panel of students, researchers, professors and renewable energy professionals to create a documentary film on the various sources of renewable energy in Nebraska.

Students with the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications traveled across the state of Nebraska and visited with congressional representatives in Washington D.C. to research and produce a video documentary about alternative energy. Interviews were completed with Governor Dave Heineman, Senator Chuck Hagel, Senator Ben Nelson, Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, Congressman Adrian Smith, Congressman Lee Terry, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and many others.

The project artners also convened two discussion groups about alternative energy featuring UNL students and a variety of experts. On March 13, 2008, the project partners convened a nuclear energy discussion featuring Alan Dostal, Corporate Nuclear Business Manager of Nebraska Public Power District, and Professor Jerry Hudgins, University of Nebraska Lincoln College of Engineering. On April 17, 2008, a discussion on ethanol was convened featuring Dan Owens, Rural Organizer with the Center for Rural Affairs, and Todd Sneller, Administrator of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. Both discussions were taped and moderated by UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications students, and aired on 5 CITY-TV.

Peace. Love. Joy.....Positive Energy

So you know the feeling that comes over your body right before you get out of bed? Not the groggy/lucid/I need coffee feeling, the other one. The calm feeling of being aware of your surroundings and in tune with all of the sensations around you. The peaceful feeling you are held in right before the daily grind hits you. Got it? Okay good, now take that peaceful feeling and multiple it times 100. That's what is radiating through my body.
From the tip of my toes to the crown on my head, I have such an incredible comfort and ease in myself as the countdown to Las Vegas draws near. Maybe I've been taking too many yoga classes, or maybe I have an incredible support system. I choose the later.
In a word, my Send-Off in North Platte was magical. Did I love modeling my wardrobe and performing my talent and answering mock interview questions? Yes. But the magic from the event came from the energy and excitement in the air. I may be getting a little deep, but I can honestly say that standing in the banquet room amongst friends, family, sponsors and supporters I literally felt enveloped in love and belief. Its one thing to be innately proud and confident in your abilities but quite another to be surrounded by people who also believe you could be Miss America. I'm so incredibly humbled and grateful for everyone who has helped me get to this point. My Miss Nebraska judges advice to me was to enter the Miss America Pageant the same way I did state; totally relaxed, enthusiastic and present. Check. Check. Check.

THANK YOU to all of the incredible people in the Nebraska contingent who have allowed me to step into this dream completely unencumbered and ready to rock the Vegas stage! I'm ready for whatever is in the plan for me. Sorry, no photos of the wardrobe. I guess you'll just have to come to Las Vegas to see it on the stage!

On another note, in the midst of preparing I have chatted with several of my Miss America sisters on the phone and they share the same excitement I do. Like me they are also concerned about how many suitcases the airline will let them ship but that's beside the point...I can't wait to reunite with them! Time of our lives here we come!
These past few weeks I have been busy dancing, working on my fitness, reporting a little, driving ridiculous amounts. On the agenda this week I will be doing final alterations and fittings on my gown and swimsuit and will be talking with Governor Heineman and Senator Ben Nelson about a little thing called health care reform and other pertinent Nebraska Issues. I'll round off the week with Send-Off Party round 2. If you are able to attend it will be the 17th at WestWinds Golf Course in Ogallala from 2-4 pm. Hope to see you there!

I'll continue to keep you updated as the countdown continues. I've received many emails/texts/calls (ahh technology!) about voting details and other odds and ends pertaining to Miss America. I'm making an information page on the blog to help keep up with all of the new updates.

One Month From Today

16 years ago, one month from today, I was celebrating my 8th Birthday. Twelve little girls were crammed into my basement at 604 east M street in Ogallala, NE for a pink themed slumber party. We opened presents, ate cake and played the traditional birthday game we played for four years in a row...Miss America. Little girls parading around in nightgowns and my mom's old brides maid outfits, fake flowers and plastic crowns. Interesting sidenote; I was always Miss Texas and I always got to be crowned Miss America ( Birthday girl perk I suppose!)
During one of my daily chats with mom, we discussed how crazy it is that in one month from today, January 28th, I will be gracing the stage in Las Vegas to compete for the job of Miss America!
Little 8 year old Brittany would have been doing back flips to hear that news, 23 year old Brittany certainly is!

Snownami 2009

And the Grinch with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.

And he puzzled and puzzled until his puzzler' was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.

What if Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.

Everyone, I would like to take this time to introduce you to Pedro. Pedro the 6 foot snowman, handsome isn't he? Pedro is a byproduct of Snownami 2009. Yes, you heard it correct. SNOWNAMI 2009 aka a blustery, wintery, powder laden snow filled blizzard that pelted Nebraska and made traveling on the holidays quite tricky. I know everyone is dreaming of a white Christmas but this was a little bit much! However, when you find yourself figuratively and literally caught in a snow storm you can become quite philosophical.

I've learned....The wonder and magic of the season never really goes away. Even if its looking forward to the people as opposed to Jolly old Saint Nick.

The secret to a massive snowman (see Pedro) is to pack and roll the snow simultaneously. Too much force and it all falls apart. I know, deep right?

Traditions were meant to be shared. Thank you to the Hannema family for making me feel so at home!

If you are traveling with colossal sized pink bags that might be stuffed to the brim and over the weight limit know that a Mac Book Pro weighs 5lbs and a hair dryer and straightener is 2 lbs. Just in case you need to take them out and shove them in a carry on.

Most importantly, the season isn't about the packages, the bling, a crown, a stocking, the size of the tree or any accolades. For me, this year was about the promise the holiday brings, the people I share it with and goals bigger than any snownami. I am completely in love with my time and place.

Wherever your egg nog is being served this year, I wish you a Merry Christmas and hope you enjoy the spirit and magic of the holiday season.

Jeffers = McCallisters

Greetings!!! Its the most wonderful time of the year and I've been busy busy busy! My recent travels could seriously be made into a short film and we aren't talking about Lifetime movie here, think more along the lines of Holiday slapstick. I think I'll reference Home Alone 2! Although I didn't get lost in in NYC like Kevin McCallister, my parents and I certainly got in to our own share of shenanigans! We shopped, we laughed, we ran, we lost things, we wound up at a police precinct and got frisked in security (more on that later). Suffice it to say my recent jaunt to the Big Apple was a jolly good time. I added some quotes from the movie to narrate the excursion :)

Mrs. Stone, Desk Clerk: Can I help you?
Kevin McCallister: A reservation for McCallister?
Mrs. Stone, Desk Clerk: A reservation for yourself?
Kevin McCallister: Ma'am, my feet are hardly touching the ground. I'm barely able to look over the counter. How can I make a reservation for a hotel room? Think about it. A kid coming into a hotel, making a reservation? I don't think so.

I didn't make the reservation alone. In fact, my parents are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and so they decided to celebrate/travel with their first born to the big city. I've said it a million and one times but I am SO lucky to have their unconditional support. My parents knock themselves out to help me accomplish my goals and even if I showed up on the Miss America stage and fell flat on my face they would still be whooping and hollering and love me to pieces.

Times Square always has a plethora of sites to look at but during the holidays it was truly magical! From the light shows, Macy's Santa, holiday window displays and ice skaters in Rockerfeller Center the city was absolutely buzzing with festivity!

Kevin McCallister: I went shopping yesterday while you were gone.
Jeff McCallister: You? Shopping?
Kevin McCallister: I got you milk, eggs, and fabric softener

Basically, we bought everything but fabric softener! KIDDING, kind of. Actually I was on a mission to land an interview outfit and after looking at what felt like every store, I found it. Of course I found the ensemble at the very last place I looked but it was well worth the wait. The outfit is essentially irrelevant because it is an interview and the judges want to get to know me and what I'm all about and won't be judging my fashion sense. However, dressing to impress is always helpful in a professional setting. I love the the outfit, its very "me" and I feel fab in it! But like I said we shopped and shopped. Not just for Miss America garb in fact, we found a lot of Christmas gifts for family members. My poor father, he is already the best man in the whole entire world but he officially the most patient as well!

Kevin McCallister: Buzz! Your girlfriend! Woof! ( My favorite line of the whole movie)

After a 3 hour sweat session with Shea Sullivan to clean up my dance I was certainly looking a little rough. I was a sweaty girl but my feet were the worst of it. Many people know dancers feet aren't particularly pretty, but mine are heinous. Flat foot, blisters....sorry. Too much information! My tootsies might not be lovely but the dance is looking fierce. I can't wait to perform it! Note to self; get pedicure.

Megan McCallister

: You're not at all worried that something might happen to Kevin?
Buzz McCallister: No, for three reasons: A, I'm not that lucky. Two, we use smoke detectors and D, we live on the most boring street in the whole United States of America, where nothing even remotely dangerous will ever happen. Period.

We had to go all the way to New York for a little drama. Mother lost her wallet. Fortunately nothing of huge significance was lost except for her ID BUT we had to board the plane home 3 hours after discovering it was lost. Drama. Needless to say we didn't anticipate visiting the NYC Police Precinct in Times Square to get an official stolen ID document. Neither did we plan to be delayed at security, frisked and then make a grand entrance on to the plane McCallister style. Think, Run Run Rudolph! I could write an entire blog about this little mishap and although it wasn't funny at the time I laugh hysterically every time I tell the story! Fortunately, We made it home safe and sound.

Back in beautiful Nebraska I am just so thankful, calm and most of all excited for all that is to come! I'll keep the updates coming. Happy happy holidays!

Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser

JOY TO THE WORLD....no seriously, I'm doing an "Elf Yourself" style jig! The Christmas Tree Fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network in North Platte raised an impressive $4,500! $4,500 smackaroos!!!!

A huge thank you to the Quality Inn & Suites for hosting the event and to all of the businesses for so graciously decorating and donating trees for the event.

I was so thrilled with the outpouring of support and with 15 trees on display, my "festive" cup was definitely bubbling over! I was so impressed with the degree of creativity on the decorations from Huskers, to peacocks, to top hats there was a plethora of choices. My favorite? A zebra print motif complete with bling, feathers and crystals! Obnoxious but oh so lovely.

Thank you again to everyone who helped to make the event a big success!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The holidays are officially here and Thanksgiving was nothing short of awesome...a fabulous way to kick start the season. I reported on Thanksgiving and the dreaded Black Friday so my Turkey Day was celebrated with family a few days after.

I was honored and humbled to attend the People's City Mission in Lincoln on Thanksgiving where they served more than 1,000 meals to those in need. Local firefighters as well as Governor Dave Heineman were there helping to serve meals and chat with everyone in attendance.

This season is truly a reminder to me to count my blessings; My family, my job and a roof over my head, every day. Every single day.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

MISS AMERICA

This lovely photo dates back to when I was in 3rd grade. I'm a starry eyed little sister posing with a former Miss Nebraska. (It was also the 90's, hence the sweet hair and Aladdin themed pageant costumes. Don't judge). It was also this year in school when the teacher asked us to make a report and drawing of what we wanted our future occupation to be. In this 3rd grade note I said I wanted to be Miss America, and an actress and have 10 kids. Well, we’ll wait to see on the last two but the first goal still rings true!

While I'm working towards the career I want (Miss America), I'm still proud to hold down my current jobs as Miss Nebraska and tv reporter on the side. I was thrilled when I got to combine all of my passions earlier week during a special Miss Nebraska appearance. I was asked to share my message about Girl Power with a local Girl Scout troop as well as give them a tour of the ABC Channel 8 station. The group of 3rd grade ladies were working on a unit on job shadowing and were looking at various possible career fields. I gave the girls a tour of the station and showed them the ins and the not so glamorous outs of reporting. The girls read the anchor prompter and even worked with the green screen in the weather station. I also got some time to share my "Uniquely ME" message and talk about my job at Miss Nebraska. I have to say, I love working with children this age!

I’m always thrilled to see them at this age because they are bubbling with possibility and they firmly carry the belief that they can do anything and be anything. Girl Power at its finest. These bubbly little ladies asked some very intriguing questions. The one that sticks out is, "How do you go about getting the job you want?" Goodness, that is a tricky one.

I say, Work for the job you want not the one you have. Come in early, stay late. Love what you do. Enthusiasm will carry you far and when it doesn't, coffee helps…just teasing! Most importantly, believe with every bone in your body you CAN get the job.

So while some of the troop wants to be artists, veterinarians, future Miss Nebraska's and teachers............I still want the Miss America job!

Wrapping up November

Greetings all! What a fabulous time of the year for festivity and joy! Sidenote; It's also an incredibly busy time of the year, not that I need to tell any of you that! I promise I will hit all of the highlights of my appearances during the holiday season but until then, I'm wrapping up the month of November with some exciting appearances.

Who likes Nebraska Trivia? Anybody? Anybody? Well, after emceeing Trivia Night to benefit the Boys & Girls Club in Lincoln, I've got a plethora of Cornhusker state knowledge! I had the pleasure of emceeing the sold out event with former Husker quarterback Joe Ganz. It was quite the pairing, as the organizer of the event Jack Coogan said, "beauty and brains." I was brains of course! The night was nothing short of hilarious. Adult teams representing various businesses and organizations in Lincoln answered questions to categories ranging from sports, food and geography. Did you know we have waterfalls in Nebraska? I had no clue!! The event raised thousands of dollars for the Boys & Girls Club. Nebraskans are truly lucky to live in a state that focuses so much energy on making youth a priority.

So to round out the last week in November I will be reporting on Thanksgiving and helping at a food pantry. I'll be reporting again on Black Friday (I'm a little nervous for the shoppers!) and then heading to North Platte for the Christmas Tree Auction fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network. I encourage anyone who will be in the area to come out to the event, it will be a festive afternoon and proceeds of the auction are going to a great cause! I'll finish up with family time in Ogallala and then head back to Lincoln to meet with the Girl Scouts State Director. I'll keep the pictures coming :)

The Value

Stop and Smell the Roses...It's the time of year when the question is rolling around; "What are you thankful for?" Hmmmm....the philosophical part of me can make this question so complex. This question is really difficult for me because it's so easy to be flippant with a response and let the typical answers fall out of my mouth. Family, friends, health, opportunities etc. are my honest response.

Not that my answers aren't genuine, but its very easy to say something without appreciating the value of the statement. I hope I haven't lost you :)

Essentially, I'm trying something new this year. When someone asks me, "What are you thankful for?" the translation is "What do I value?". Where do I place worth, on both tangible and intangible things.

In a whirlwind of a year, I often have to remind myself to stop...breathe...take it in and truly be present and appreciate the moment. I'm very guilty of the go, go, go mindset but the things that I accomplish on my "To Do"list are not what I value.

Above all this year, I value the relationships in my life and the time I've had to foster them. From old friends, new acquaintances, with God, chance encounters, family and with myself. I value these relationships because they provide comfort and support with a fun twist. I'm thankful for the spontaneity in some of these relationships and the constant comfort cultivated in others, for the ones that ground me and the ones that raise me up. During the holidays this year I'm going to try to remember to be present and joyous in every moment I get with people I value most.

A big congratulations to the 5 new titleholders who will be gracing the Miss Nebraska & Miss Nebraska Outstanding Teen stage in June. With 14 "Miss" contestants and 6 "Teen" contestants competing, the talent level on the stage was absolutely astonishing! I was honored to share the stage with all of these dynamic ladies. Hugs and a big congratulations for Devin Howell, Amber Leider and Nicky Haverland who will be competing in June for Miss Nebraska and Staci Craighead & Jordan Sumer will be vying for the Teen title!

I have soft spot for this pageant and all of the volunteers because I held the title of Miss Omaha last year. The relationship I have with Marianne and board supercede the pageant realm, they are like family to me! It was so much fun to share the emcee podium with Mr. Bob Kropp and my adopted little sis and Miss NE Outstanding Teen, JaCee Pilkington. Bob was honored for his 20 years of volunteering at the pageant, he is an incredible asset to the organization and just plain hilarious!! For me, the highlight of the pageant for me was getting to spend the afternoon with the Little Sisters. We had so much fun with production numbers, those little ladies can dance and I have no doubt there are some future Miss Nebraskas in the bunch!

No Greater Calling

Miss Nebraska= Proud Big Sister

Just two days after Veterans Day I was honored to attend the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Dining Out in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dining out is a formal dinner and banquet for the cadets family and friends. It wasn't exactly a typical appearance, I was there for support.
My younger brother, Christopher, is a Cadet 3rd Class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Air Force ROTC Detachment 465. Chris is an engineering major at UNL, Full academic scholarship, 4.0, wants to fly for the Air Force. Sorry I'm obnoxious, but I can't help it. I'm a proud sister.
In addition to being a gloating sibling, the event only furthered the feeling of appreciation and gratitude deep within my heart for the veterans who have served our country and for the young men and women who are preparing to. Sitting in the audience I was just in awe of the selflessness, not only in the service men and women before me but in those across the country. My mind started to wander to the tragedy at Fort Hood, realizing that regardless of where you live and what you do for a living, as an American our lives are touched by the military.
I recently reported on the send off for the Nebraska Army National Guard unit that was stationed at fort hood for training. Thankfully, all of our soldiers from the NE unit were safe but it was an eye opener and reminder on how these events touch all of us.
This is a little late but THANK YOU to all of the men and women who serve our country.

In a word, my journey as Miss Nebraska has been, incredible. Daily I get to experience joy on so many levels and....I am racking up an impressive amount of frequent flyer miles too!
My latest excursion took me back to the sunshine state. Even though I love the Cornhusker state I have to say, Florida's 80 degree weather was a nice little treat in comparison to the snow storms we've had in Nebraska.
The trip went a little something like this; Lincoln to Kansas City, Kansas City to Miami and then a road trip from Miami to Orlando. Did I mention this all took place in 48 hours and I only took a carry on bag?? (an impressive feat if you understand my love for packing up pink suitcases) I worked on designing a gown for Miss America with the very talented Juan Carlos and Fernando. I had a great time playing dress up and am completely thrilled with the design! Sorry no pictures, you"ll have to come to Las Vegas to see it on the stage! In Orlando I worked with the incredibly creative Becky Bangert to design my dance costume. She is simply amazing and a native Nebraskan!
After the fittings I was even more thrilled because I got to stay with my Aunt and Uncle and little diva cousins in Orlando. There really is nothing better then family time, nothing. I'm just so thankful for all of my family, friends, sponsors, board members and volunteers who have had their hand in making sure my Miss America is experience is memorable and I don't mean by providing a stellar wardrobe or rhinestones. I will never be able to express how grateful I am to be surrounded by people who make me feel so happy, so loved and so alive each and every day...cue the happy dance music!
I'm leaving on a jet plane...kidding! Actually, I'm driving to the next Miss NE appearance.

That pretty much sums up what I have been up to since my last blog! Lately my mantra has been pretty simple, Breathe. Unfortunately this is easier said then done however, there isn't a day I don't wake up and do a happy dance because I have the coolest/most rewarding job ever. After a long stretch of appearances I spent a few days reporting at Channel 8. Now I'm packing up for another fun excursion to Florida for some Miss America wardrobe preparation as well as visiting some pretty fabulous family. 3 little diva cousins in particular!

I'll post pictures after the trip.

19th Annual Miss Chadron/Miss Northwest Local Pageant

Congratulations to the new Miss Chadron, Mariah Cook and Miss Northwest, Caitlin Parker! These two young women are both students at Chadron State College and will be fabulous local titleholders and representatives at the Miss Nebraska 2010 Pageant in June! A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to organize the pageant. The production went off without a hitch and all of the 8 contestants did a PHENOMENAL job, I hope to see each and every one of them up on the Miss Nebraska stage this June.

2 New Self-Discoveries

A. I'm infatuated with Mascots

B. I can pack for any and all weather in one suitcase. No Seriously! Snow, sleet, rain, heat....
In the past few weeks I've encountered every kind of mascot and every kind of weather! As you can see I have a soft spot for the Herbie Husker mascot, but also struck a pose with Stormy, Spike and even clowns!
In addition to hanging out with mascots I promise I have been busy with appearances and dodging the tempestuous weather. Promise! To call Nebraska weather schizophrenic is an understatement. In the span of a week, I reported in 60 degree weather in Lincoln and then on the way to North Platte I drove 45 miles per hour on the interstate as the first snow of the season came down. 16 inches of wintery goodness to be exact!
It has been a hectic but incredibly fun past 2 weeks. As always, I had a wonderful time making appearances for some of the Miss Nebraska sponsors. Viearo Wireless is a large supporter of the Miss Nebraska program in addition to sponsoring the Tri-City Storm Hockey Team in Kearney, thus I got to hang out at the rink signing autographs, greeting fans and posing with Stormy. The next day the fabulous sponsor Mr. Bob Spady invited me to attend to the Kids Fun Festival in North Platte.
Some other highlights included being a keynote speaker on Self-Esteem and presenting my Uniquely ME program at the Nebraska State Student Council Convention in Ogallala. I was so impressed with the 1,000 high school students who attended because of their enthusiasm for service. Speaking of enthusiasm, I literally got goosebumps listening to other keynote speaker, Johnathon Sprinkles talk about the importance of individuality. A-MAZING.
In between appearances I managed to fit in some reporting time at Channel 8.
I'm always incredibly humbled and touched when I get to cover any story involving our service men and women. I was honored to get to report on a send off for a Nebraska Army National Guard unit. The unit was deploying to Afghanistan as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I got to speak with the soldiers as well as their friends and family. I was and am, so very thankful for their service to our country.
I even got to mesh my job as reporter/Miss Nebraska and cover the "Ochos" aka the lady reporter at Channel 8, as they walked in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer"walk in Lincoln. It was truly touching to listen to survivors share their story of hope and awareness.
Rounding out the past 2 weeks I ventured to Denver for interview preparation and more shopping! There's plenty more on the calendar, and the Miss Nebraska ride is winterized and ready to barrel through whatever crazy weather comes my way...rain, snow, sleet, tornadoes :)

some people are settling down, some people are settling, and some people refuse to settle for anything less then BuTTeRfLiEs....
In the spirit of my trek to New York I HAD to throw in a good "Sex & the City Quote!" The trip was a whirl wind but absolutely, positively, undeniably one of the best trips ever. period.

I checked a lot of items off of my Miss America preparation list which was the main purpose of the venture. I shopped, shopped, shopped and walked, walked, walked (yes Marianne, I gave in and actually wore flats for a change!). In addition to bolstering the wardrobe for Vegas, we worked on preparations for my talent and got to do some touristy site seeing. Mamma Mia on Broadway rocked my socks off by the way!

I also picked my competition order for Miss America aka "The draft." I sat on my hotel bed prepared and ready to wait for 4 hours before my state was drawn and then ...SHA BAM...Nebraska popped up on the screen! I had 4 minutes to decide my placement but really, it was a quick and painless decision, no strategizing. I went with my instinct and I am lucky number 13 in the MU group. This means I have interview Monday morning, onstage question on Tuesday, Swimsuit/Evening Gown on Wednesday and perform my dance on Thursday night. Yah!! It's so real now, in four months I will be competing on the Miss America Stage. There are no words. Dream come true, dancing around the room!

Another major highlight of the trip was meeting with Gretchen Carlson, FOX news anchor and former Miss America, for coffee!!! I was seriously on cloud 9, Gretchen was so incredibly open and real and funny. All in all, I couldn't have asked for slash, imagined a more amazing trip.

My body is now very confused on what time zone I am on but I'm back to zooming around Nebraska :)

There's Only One Place That Calls You One of Their Own

"Way Out in Ogallala Where You Can Whoop and Holler Ain't Nobodies Business But Our Own"

Okay, Okay you have to forgive me. I was having a flashback moment to my Front Street Showgirl Days and had to bust out in song! Now that I have my musical tribute out of my system I will go on with the blog.

I hail from a small town that most of you have never heard of much less pronounce. Ogallala. I might have big city dreams but I'm a small town girl at heart and I am SO incredibly lucky to have grown up in a community that is so devoted to values, family, education, faith, hard work and genuine heart. That being said, I was so thrilled to be asked to come be apart of the 25th Annual Ogallala Indian Summer Rendezvous. For those who haven't had the pleasure to attend the Rendezvous it is a blast and half! Seriously!

I got to ride in the Homecoming parade as well as emcee the High School Pep Rally, sign pictures and take pictures with the people/friends/family/neighbors/teachers that I love the most.

I also got to emcee the "Little Miss Rendezvous/Mr. Mountain Man" Contest. These little kids were a kick in the pants, so much sass and moxy, I loved it! Highlights? I had a little boy named Harry who growled at me not once, but five times. I found a choreographer for my talent at Miss America, she's six and has some mean dance moves. The majority of children in Ogallala want to grow up to be "rockstars" and believe they should win because "they like it."

So much fun!

In the midst of this whirl wind year I've never been more appreciative of thankful for all of the people I'm lucky enough to have in my "bubble". Sometimes you just need your girlfriends and I truly have some of the best ones if I do say so myself! Rest and You Rust
One thing is for sure, there is no resting and no rusting going on here!! Coffee? Yes please...September was the worst month to try to curb my caffeine addiction, I promised my trainer I'll aim to be better in October. (yeah right!) By my calculations or lets be real, Mapquests', I logged 1,000 miles in 72 hours!!! I'm definately not turning into the Tinman but I am having a blast and a half! I've been zooming all around the state.
Highlights include parades and appearances at the NE State Fair, Judging and participating in Homecoming events at my alma mater the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the annual Miss Nebraska Children's Miracle Network Golf Tournament Fundraiser, Miss Nebraska Sponsor Viaero Wireless appearances and jaunts to the Capitol. I've been a busy lady!
After I finish updating, I'm off to finish packing (oodles and oodles of pink bags of course!) for my trip/adventure to NEW YORK!!!! I'll be there for 5 days working on preparations for Miss America, I'll be sure to post them as soon as I return to HuskerLand!

Oh the suspense! I can finally say something about it! The rumors are true, the production crews from MTV's MADE were filming during Miss Nebraska Pageant week in North Platte, NE. They were following the teen contestants, specifically 15 year old Kyra Gray in her quest to come out of her shell as a Tom boy and decided to enter her in the the Miss Nebraska's Outstanding Teen Pageant. After all of the editing and such ( I know how that goes!) I'm not sure what the end result will be but it will be airing on Sunday, September 6th at pm. Check it out
